The Velari Single-Jointed Pelham Short Sweet Iron combines the action of a snaffle and a curb in one refined design. Thanks to the short shanks this bit provides a mild leverage effect, distributing pressure subtly over the mouth, poll and chin. This makes the bit suitable for horses that benefit from extra support, balance or refinement in communication without immediately switching to a harsher mouthpiece.
The single-jointed mouthpiece provides a direct and clear action, with rein aids transmitted distinctly. When contact is taken the joint forms a V-shape that distributes pressure over the tongue and bars. Many horses appreciate the stable, uncomplicated feel of a single-jointed mouthpiece, especially horses that prefer a clear pivot point and a consistent contact.
The mouthpiece is made of sweet iron, a material that naturally oxidizes with use. This stimulates saliva production and encourages the horse to accept the bit more relaxed. The increased salivation helps achieve a smoother contact and contributes to a calm, confident way of going.
The short Pelham shanks make the leverage milder and easier for the rider to modulate. The bit can be ridden with two reins or with bit converters, depending on the desired action. In combination with a curb chain this provides extra stability and an even distribution of pressure while riding.

Care & use
Rinse the bit with warm water after each ride and dry it with a soft cloth. Over time sweet iron will develop a light patina due to natural oxidation, which enhances taste and acceptance. Store the bit in a dry place and check regularly for wear.
Ensure the bit is fitted correctly: the star is on the left side and the Velari logo on the right side.
