- How to choose the right helmet
You are ready for a new helmet, but how to choose the right one. Safety when riding is the first priority and that includes all possible protection. A helmet protects your head during a fall, but also against a bump from your horse or low-hanging branches during a ride in the woods.
With a helmet, it is important that it fits securely on your head and does not move and stay on your head when you turn your head upside down or loosen the chin strap.
How long can a helmet last?
It is best to replace your helmet after 5 years. The inside and outside of the helmet lose quality over the years due to various factors. However, by taking good care of your helmet, the quality of the helmet remains better. Store your helmet in a dry and cool place, preferably in a helmet bag. Do not leave your helmet lying around and do not put it outside in the sun, as this causes it to dry out.
After a hard fall, we recommend replacing your helmet immediately! Invisible damage can also mean that your helmet no longer offers the safety you need.
Measuring your helmet size
You can find out the size of your helmet by measuring your head with a tape measure. Measure the circumference of your head just above your eyebrows and over the thickest point of the back of your head, as that is where the rim of your helmet will sit. The circumference in centimetres is the size of the helmet you need.
Difference in brands
Nowadays, there are a huge number of different types of helmets. Each brand of helmet has a different fit, look and details. For instance, you can even customise your helmet with some brands, these are called custom helmets and you can put them together using a configurator, such as with: Kep Italia, KASK Star Lady, KASK Dogma and Samshield. But even many helmets in our store already have nice stones, prints or glitter. Our range of helmets consists only of approved, certified and well-known rider helmet brands. So, we sell a suitable helmet for every rider.
Well-known helmet brands are:
-Kep Italia
-Samshield
-Charles Owen
-Uvex
-KASK
The safety of the helmet and the MIPS system
The number of helmets incorporating the MIPS system is increasing. MIPS stands for: Multi-directional Impact Protection System. During a fall, our brain moves a little inside our head, protected by a layer of fluid connected to our brain at the skull. In the event of a fall from your horse, chances of brain injury are high. The MIPS system differs from other helmets in that an extra, thin shell is fitted inside the helmet. Like the brain, this moves slightly along during a fall. As a result, the impact the brain receives is a lot smaller. This also reduces the risk of brain injury.
Fitting a helmet
If you know the size of your helmet, it is useful to try on different types of helmets before buying one. Wear your hair the way you normally wear it when riding. With a helmet, it is important that it sits securely on your head and stays on if you turn your head upside down or loosen the chin strap. Walk a few laps through the store to feel whether the helmet is too tight or loose - it should not give you a headache.
