Carrots in the diet of horses
Carrots are primarily a source of carotenoids - antioxidants, which are also dyes that give carrots their characteristic orange color. Carrots contain several types of carotenoids, such as lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene, alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, or provitamin A. Carrots are also rich in other antioxidants, such as flavonoids (kaempferol, luteolin, quercetin and others) and phenolic compounds, such as chlorogenic acid, hydroxycinnamic acid, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid or caffeic acid. They largely ensure that carrots have a strong free radical-fighting effect.
