Buying a horse rug? Pick the right size!

Does your horse need a new rug, but you are not sure which size fits best? When buying a horse rug, it is very important that the size is right for your horse. A rug that is too small or too tight increases the risk of chafing spots. A rug that is too big will easily sag, which will eventually damage the rug and make it uncomfortable for the horse. The best way to determine the size of the rug is to measure your horse's upper lengths and lower lengths.

   

Rugs from different brands in the same size may have a different fit. Some brands work with different rug sizes than the Dutch size. On our website you will always find the Dutch sizes of the rugs. Bucas uses a different size system than other brands, the lower and upper length have a different ratio and the fit is therefore different. Bucas rugs are generally well suited for long or narrow horses. For bigger horses Bucas has the "Big Neck" rugs which are very suitable for Friesians or other broader horse breeds.

Horseware is a company from Ireland which produces rugs for the following (sub)brands: Rambo, Amigo, MIO, Rhino and Horseware. Horsware, like Bucas, has a different sizing system than most other brands. Horseware rugs are usually recommended for shorter and broader horses, such as Friesians, Andalusians, Fjords, Tinkers, etc.

WeatherBeeta is not very well known in the Netherlands yet, but internationally they have many satisfied customers who swear by the quality of a WeatherBeeta rug. Always fit the rug with a thin rug or sheet underneath so that the inner lining of the rug is not covered with hair. Fleece-lined rugs are easy to keep hair in. This way you can prevent your horse from getting the rug dirty or damaging it. Always try on the blanket outside of the stable in a clean environment with plenty of space. If the rug does not fit well, put it back in the bag with all the cards still attached. This way it can still be exchanged!
